Surf Land

I must be craving summer. I remember being struck by Joni Sternbach’s photographs of surfers captured raw in nature a few years back. The Brooklyn-based photographer uses the wet collodion process, a system of shooting and developing film in the field dating back to the Civil War. She compares her slow, spontaneous process to a line from Rebecca Solnit’s book A Field Guide to Getting Lost: That thing, the nature of which is totally unknown to you is what you need to find, and finding it is a matter of getting lost.

These were on display at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem a few years ago. It’s such a coincidence that you posted them, because they reminded me of you at the time! They’re even more beautiful close up, and reading about her process is so inspiring.
